Pure-Fluoro Ban at JOQs Still in Effect

Rocky Mountain Nordic coaches agree to continue with their now-three-year-long ban of pure-fluoro glide wax use at RMN Junior Olympic Qualifier races.

Since 2003, coaches within Rocky Mountain Nordic have held to a gentlemen's agreement in regards to the non-use of pure-fluoro glide waxes at Junior Olympic Qualifier races. In a meeting held 12.03.05 at Gold Run Nordic Center in Breckenridge, Colo., the decision was reached to continue this arrangement.

The agreement does not apply to races held in conjunction with other regions, such as the annual Super Qualifier event held at Soldier Hollow with Inter-mountain Northern, Far West and High Plains teams.

Pure-fluoro waxes in powder, block, rub-on or spray form are not to be used at RMN JOQs.

Glide waxes that are hydrocarbon-based with high- or low-fluoro content are allowed.

The decision was made in recognition of the expense of these products and the potential health hazards frequent exposure can present.

Coaches and racers who are unsure if a particular product violates the agreement should contact RMN executive director, Jason Cork at: rmnordic@gmail.com or 970.799.4993
